Italian Version

We are pleased to announce the launch of Power and Democracy – International Journal of Politics, Philosophy and Law, an online, semi-annual, peer-reviewed and open-access scientific publication. The Journal receives contributions from various disciplinary perspectives on the dynamics that influence the balance of power in a democratic order. It values the centrality of the fundamental rights of the person/individual, with reference to the role of the institutions within a polyarchic and subsidiary paradigm that overcomes the rigid distinction between public and private spheres.

Thinking Politics, Philosophy and Law

The monographic section of the first issue of Power and Democracy is intended to deepen the methodological approaches to the study of Politics, Philosophy, and Law. In the era of instantaneousness, the ancient and noble practice of theoretical and conceptual reflection seems to have lost its significance, only to return central in times of crisis – such as the one we are experiencing – when the illusion of short-term perspectives shows all their weakness. Any solution to solve a ‘crisis’ requires precise processing, a valid argumentative structure, and well-thought-out solutions.

On the basis of these considerations, original contributions capable of proposing and discussing a rigorous methodological analysis on the issues of Politics, Philosophy and Law are therefore solicited. Specifically, the contributions must have as references the two theoretical cornerstones around which the scientific activity of the Journal revolves: power and democracy. Contributions with a transdisciplinary approach that know how to make the areas of interest of the journal enter profitability are not precluded and, at the same time, essays that investigate specific themes, although always related to political, philosophical, and legal theory, are also welcomeDeadline for submission: June 30, 2020.

Role and behaviour of the democratic powers in crisis-management

The monographic section of the second issue of Power and Democracy will be devoted to a topic as old as present in the current debate: how democratic powers manage the crises. The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has prompted governments around the world to act quickly to deal with the emergency of contagions: differences have emerged between the reaction of democratic and non-democratic regimes. However, it is precisely the institutional complexity and organization of the democratic civil society that makes it difficult to accept a too-long derogation from the democratic control of governmental acts. Divided between resistance and conformism towards uses and abuses of the emergency powers, public opinion rethinks its relationship with the concept and the practice of representation. Already challenged by populist delegitimization, parliaments today have to defend the compression of their prerogatives by governments, which pursue popular consensus, even by resorting to unscrupulous political communication.

This monographic section of Power and Democracy welcomes critical, and not merely descriptive, studies on the impact of emergency logic on democratic institutions, also recurring to comparative or analogue keys with respect to the crises already occurred in the past.Deadline for submission: June 30, 2020.
